Banksy visits Gaza Strip

By Megan E. Bloom

With so much discussion about issues like ISIS and net neutrality, American media has put aside the issues going on in Palestine.

The Gaza Strip, located along the East coast of the Mediterranean Sea, has been left dismantled due to the war between Hamas and Israel.

Charity, Oxfam International made a statement on their website that, “At current rates it could take more than 100 years to complete essential building of homes, schools and health facilities in Gaza unless the Israeli blockade is lifted.”

According to the organization, 1.7 million Palestinians are trapped in Gaza due to the blockade that was instated eight years ago. They are cut off from the rest of the world and are living in shambles; many living without access to running water, electricity or a roof over their heads.

Anonymous British artist, Banksy, who is famous for his politically driven street art, visited the Gaza Strip to create new art work in the city.

During his time there he created a short video called Make this the year YOU discover a new destination documented his experience. Entering the city through illegal tunnels he sees the complete destruction that the Palestinians are living in.

The artist showed four of the images he created in the video. One featured a kitten with a pink bow around its neck that a local man asked Banksy about, according to NPR

The man asked what does this picture mean.

Banksy replied, “I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website — but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens.”
